June 19 – July 11, 2010
Opening Reception Saturday June 19 5p – 9p
35th North Skateshop
1100 E. Pike St. Seattle, Wa

Art at 35th North is proud to present “Urban Playground”, a series of new drawings by artist Nhon Nguyen exploring the architectural environment of Seattle through the eyes of a skateboarder. It has been said that the repurposing of the architectural landscape of our cities by skateboarders is the ultimate in culture bending. Nhon’s work explores the way people are transforming the mundane into a virtual playground, often transforming forgotten corners of the city into hallowed proving grounds of ones prowess on a skateboard. This series of drawings builds upon his work that was started in Osaka, Japan where his travels through the city allowed him to create his own series of landmarks based on the multitude of great skatespots he would find during these trips. Nhon Nguyen is a longtime resident of Seattle, Wa and is often the first person out at Lower Woodland skatepark. A limited edition skatedeck will be created in conjunction with this show.

Stubborn Sideburn

June 2, 2010

Art at 35th North is proud to present the art of STUBBORN SIDEBURN for the month of May as well as the release of his LTD. Edition 35th North Shop Skate Deck. Junichi Tsuneoka was born and raised in Japan and, upon graduating Waseda University in Tokyo, arrived in the US at the end of the 20th Century. After five years …as a graphic designer, Junichi established a style often recognized as “California Roll Stylie,” the result of both a visual and conceptual fusion of Japanese pop culture and American urban culture. He founded STUDIO STUBBORN SIDEBURN to broaden his visual communication and to employ his visual language in art, illustration, and design. Junichi’s pieces possess highly communicative, assertive graphics, and contain clear signs pointing back to his strong design background. California Roll Stylie is still evolving, as it has been consuming Japanese traditional aspect to reflect in Junichi’s art.

He use’s a lexicon of images that relate to specific events in his history. Repeated images of bridges, birds, trains, war, masks, urban landscapes, and old family portraits find their way into his work lending themselves to an unfolding narrative. The Sky Is Fall – New work by Iosefatu Sua

March 3, 2010

A voice spoke down upon me one day and said, “build plenty of skateboards and tell the people to skate to the top of the mountain and lay down below the trees which grow there naturally. I shall spare the lives of those who obey. I am angry and shall punish the wretched sinners.”
